45 Funny Posts About Life After You Turn 40!

By Larissa C

Being young, wild, and free is something that we all aspire to. For a while, lots of people were scared of getting older, but the truth is that there’s nothing scary about turning 40! The concept of being a “young” person is not exclusively related to being physically young — we can always have a young soul! Even though its been said that 40 is the new 30, the stigma of turning 40 is still very much alive and well, the people who are turning 40 and more have actually been changing the way that younger individuals perceive them. How are they doing that, you may be wondering. Well, it’s simple: these people have been making incredibly funny posts about life after turning 40!  Are you curious to see what they have been saying? Here are 45 hilarious posts about life in your 40s!

Every 40 years old man ever!

You may or may not have noticed that most men on social media post pictures posing in the same (or very similar) manner. Apparently, once men turn 40, they start posting these pictures on a regular basis! The cats in this next post are an accurate representation of men’s profile pictures:

Looking at these pictures, you’re probably thinking of the 40-year-old men you know, aren’t you? It seems like they all learned to take selfies from the same angles— and this person taught them all to put the camera right in their faces and make a blank expression!

Do they come in a package?

Whenever we feel bad about getting older, some people tend to say that life is only beginning for us. While we do understand that they’re trying to be nice and positive, but we have to be honest here. Life may begin at 40…but it sure brings some unexpected guests!

As unfortunate as that tweet sounds, it is actually very accurate. Sure, we may feel carefree and more confident once we turn 40, but we also feel other things. Faulty eyesight and memory lapses are just a few of those things!

Run for the hills!

Lately, it feels like the years have gotten shorter, and that time is moving faster than ever before. Don’t believe us? What if we told you that children born in 2003 are turning 18 years old this year? Yep, that’s true. And we may have some news for people born in the 1980s.

This meme is pretty self-explanatory, isn’t it? It feels like it was just yesterday that people born in the 1980s were turning 30, and now you guys are about to start turning 40! But, hey, don’t be scared like the man in the picture. Turning 40 years old is actually pretty cool and is considered chic nowadays!

Symptoms and more symptoms!

As we mentioned previously, turning 40 means you’ll start feeling things you didn’t feel before. In fact, if you don’t exercise regularly, you’ll probably feel like you’re twice your age, to be honest. This next Twitter post is hilariously (yet painfully) accurate:

Image courtesy of Hackensack Meridian Health/Bruce Harris-Twitter

We bet people don’t usually tell you that, do they? Life after 40 includes having ailments you didn’t have before, although they’re just minor illnesses, and we’re probably too overdramatic about them. Though if it makes you feel better, we’re not alone — even people in their early 20s have been complaining about things such as back pain lately!

At least we find joy in the simplest things!

None of the posts thus far have been nice about life after 40. This next post is here to change that. When we’re young, we’re too busy thinking about our responsibilities and dreaming about things that are still too far away. Because of that, we stop feeling grateful for the small things.

When you turn 40, you start having a newfound appreciation for things that you probably didn’t even notice before. This tweet is a perfect representation of how we react to simple things such as sponges when we’re in our 40s. Isn’t that the cutest?

It’s so easy…just kidding!

Did you think that dating was hard when you were young? That’s because you probably haven’t tried dating in your 40s. Single people in this age range are probably dating for the first time since divorce, they have children, and they’re just not used to dating anymore.

Image courtesy of Time Magazine/Mary Ann-Twitter

Okay, the person who posted this tweet is probably overreacting. Dating in your 40s is hard, but it’s not that bad. If you’re looking forward to finding love after you turn 40, we’re here to tell you that it’s not impossible — you just have to keep an open mind!

Thanks for the reminder, Yoda!

While this next meme is certainly funny, it makes us wonder why do people think that becoming old is not a good thing? Personally, we’re okay with growing older — that’s the cycle of life, after all! We are born, we grow up, and we grow older, and get better and wiser …

Also, if we consider that the average human being lives for approximately 72 years, we’re still pretty far from being old when we turn 40! Turning 40 doesn’t mean we’ll suddenly need reading glasses or a walker — it just means that we need to start living life to its fullest!

Expect great things!

Yes, Gandalf, so it begins! While we’re not here to tell you that you’ll feel brand-new once you turn 40, we can tell you that things will become pretty interesting (in a positive way). You probably won’t feel as shy as you did when you were younger, and this will play a major role in the experiences you’ll have!

Apart from the physical consequences of turning 40, there are actually quite a lot of good things that come with being in your forties. First of all, your entire life will be established by that time, which means that you’ll finally have time to start experiences the things you didn’t have time for!

Am I really just hungover?

If you started drinking when you were 21, you probably still remember how you felt the morning after you drank. Sure, we’re not exempt from feeling hungover, but the consequences of drinking are not that bad. We feel totally recovered by the end of the day, isn’t that right?

We have some potentially bad news for you: when you have a hangover at 40 years old, you won’t just feel bad; you’ll feel like you’re going to need medical care! And no, we’re not exaggerating. That’s just the way life is!

We’re not becoming a meme, honey!

Kids share every single thing of their lives on the internet nowadays. The influx of posts is so large that we can’t even control what people post about us anymore. If you have one too many beers and embarrass yourself in public, one thing is for sure: someone is going to post about it!

Image courtesy of Nu Origins Magazine/Julia Cohen- Twitter

Now, embarrassing posts are simply not something that people in their 40s are scared of. Want to know why? Because we didn’t have internet or Facebook or Instagram back then! We could be as stupid as we wanted, and no one was going to post anything about it!

You’re doing great…for your age!

There are a few things that will start happening in your life once you turn 40. We’ve already mentioned the ailments, the hangovers, the difficulty to date people…but there’s just one more thing you’ll notice about life in your 40s.

And that thing is: people will start adding “for your age” at the end of every compliment! Do they think you look fit and healthy? They’ll say you look great for your age. Did you get promoted at work? They’ll say you have a great job for your age!

Be smart!

Are you still trying to get used to being or turning 40? We certainly understand how that feels like — it takes quite a lot of emotional and psychological effort to understand that there’s nothing wrong with getting older! If you’re still struggling with life after 40, this next post has a great tip for you:

Instead of saying that you’re 40, you can always say you’re 18 — but you have 22 years of experience! That’s a witty and clever way of revealing your age, isn’t it? But once you get used to being a 40-year-old individual, you won’t need that crutch anymore!

A great dilemma!

As we grow older, one thing is for sure: we’ll start peeing more often, and sometimes it will be pretty hard to hold it in! But we’ll also feel too lazy to walk to the bathroom, and it’s going to be a great dilemma for us. Should we stay in bed, or should we just go to the bathroom already?

If you identify with that dilemma, you’re probably in your 40s, or you’re about to turn 40. You’ll start noticing how hard it is to get out of your comfy bed and head to the bathroom, especially after a long day of hard work or on a cold winter night.

Thanks for the heads-up, Al!

If you’re in your 40s, then you probably the hit TV show “Married with Children.” Al Bundy, one of the protagonists, was a sarcastic loser — but he sure did have many fans. And this what his fan page posted for their followers who were turning 40:

Image courtesy of ScreenRant/Al Bundy Fan Page- Twitter

Two posts in a row about peeing in your 40s? We’re pretty sure that now you get the gist! As you grow older, you start peeing more frequently — but know you’re not alone! According to studies, over 20 million Americans have an overactive bladder, which means that they have to go to the bathroom several times a day!

Have I been lied to?

Remember how we mentioned that it is considered chic to be a 40-year-old person nowadays? And that you shouldn’t feel embarrassed about getting older because lots of people have come to understand that life doesn’t end when you’re 40; it is just beginning?

While all of that is true, there’s a lot more to being in your forties. Lots of people say that 40 is the new 20, or that life begins at 40, but have these people even turned 40 yet? There’s no way that all of the physical pains we start feeling is the new 20 — it just can’t be true!

Time for the cold, harsh truth!

As we grow older, our body naturally becomes frailer. We may be injured more easily, and we start feeling pains we didn’t feel before, especially joint pain and back pain. Even the simplest things hurt, including sleeping. Yep, once you turn 40, you’ll understand what we’re talking about!

Image courtesy of Best Life/User Unknown -Twitter

This image should have a warning sign: “Beware: the next Twitter post contains high levels of irony!” In fact, you may have noticed that a lot of people in their 40s are pretty ironic and sarcastic in their posts, right? We wonder if that’s a trait we acquire as we turn 40!

The math can’t be right!

We can’t be too sure of anything in life except one thing: our metabolism will inevitably become slower as we grow older. What does that mean for us? Among other things, it means that it will get increasingly hard to lose weight, unfortunately!

Image courtesy of Real Tough Dad

This post is the perfect explanation of how a slow metabolism works. Once you get to your 40s, losing weight becomes harder than ever — but gaining weight becomes significantly easier! It’s like we’re taking that popular saying “one step forward, two steps back” way too literally!

Another hard truth for us!

Based on what we’ve seen so far, once you turn 40, you start learning that most truths for people our age are hard to take in. This next post brings yet another harsh truth to slap us on the face and make us remember that we’re getting old!

If this tweet had been posted by someone who’s not in their 40s yet, it could easily be considered offensive. But the truth is that the original poster knows what they’re talking about. Once we turn 40, we still have many years left before retirement, but who knows if our body can handle it!

Don’t mess up your sleep routine!

Our sleep routine is one of the things we should always take care of. Instead, we always find a way of ruining that routine, especially when we’re young and want to stay up until later than we should. However, you’ll probably want to stop that once you turn 40.

This picture is pretty clear: if you’re turning 40, be aware that you will regret deeply every time you stay up until late! See this man’s pained facial expression? That’s probably going to be you if you don’t have a nice and early proper sleep routine!

Who needs that many pills?

When you were younger and visiting your grandparents, you probably noticed a pill organizer lying somewhere visible. At that point in time, pill organizers seemed odd to us and not like something we thought we would ever, ever need. If you’re turning 40, we have some news for you!

The news we have is: you’re many steps closer to having your very own pill organizer! As the original poster playfully says, once you get to your 40s, your personal pill organizer will be assigned to you. By whom? We have no idea!

My patience is running low!

Want to hear a fun fact? Our health is not the only thing that decreases with age; our patience also starts running low! By the time we’re in our 40s, we’ve already been on Earth for long enough to know what we consider annoying or not.

Image courtesy of i-D Magazine/Sonja Butler- Twitter

According to Sonja, all it takes for a 40-year-old person to be annoyed is waking up and staying up for 30 minutes! Half an hour is enough to see a number of things that can potentially ruin your day once you get to your forties!

Excuse me if I’m practical!

The following tweet is quite controversial. Some people think that it is an ironic tweet mocking people in their 40s; others don’t think that the tweet represents something that is not good. Personally, we believe that this is actually a great idea!

Can you imagine not having to get out of bed in order to eat a snack? That’s why we think that keeping snacks in a drawer is actually one of the best ideas ever! And do you know what is the best part? No one can say anything about your snack drawer, because you’re 40 years old!

How can I turn back time?

If you don’t have gastritis or bile reflux, you should probably thank the heavens for that. And also, be thankful for all the years you didn’t feel anything after eating..or after waking up. Once you get to your 40s, one of the things you’ll feel almost constantly is heartburn!

Image courtesy of Carolina Digestive/Dan Sommers-Twitter

We’re sad to inform you that Mr. Dan Sommers is not wrong. Life in your 40s means you’ll have to deal with different ailments, including heartburn. Do you want a helpful tip, though? If you change your diet and start eating healthy, you’ll avoid having heartburn. Plus, it’ll make your 40s feel much better!

Is that so?

Humans talk about different topics throughout their lifetime. When we’re kids, all we can talk about is video games. During our teenage years, we only care about hanging out with friends and talking about cute guys/girls. As adults, we talk about our jobs and our mortgages. Once we turn 40, we start talking about something different…

Image courtesy of The Best of Humanity on Film/Kim Bongiorno-Twitter

And that’s gardening! Well, gardening and other domestic stuff. Life in your 40s involves inviting people over and then gushing over your plants, or how green and pretty your grass looks, or how your vegetable garden produces the most delicious vegetables!

Yeah…never mind.

Still on the topic of “things we talk about at different ages,” there’s something you’ll notice when you turn 40: youngsters have a language of their own. No matter how cool you try to look by wearing modern clothes or watching popular TV shows, your manner of speaking will definitely give away your age!

However, we wonder if that’s a good or a bad thing? 20-somethings sure can talk about trivial things, and that’s why people in their 40s can’t keep up with them. If you’re feeling bad about getting older, we recommend that you hang out with some kids half your age. You’ll feel good about yourself in no time!

Time is moving faster!

Do you feel like you were turning 18 just a few years ago? Do you feel like people born in the 1980s were born just yesterday? Well, we have to tell you that they weren’t. In fact, they were born 40 years ago. And yes, it’s been four decades since the year 1980!

If it makes you feel better, we’re all having that feeling that time is moving faster than ever. The years seem to flash by, and the next thing we know, we’re all adults now! There’s a scientific explanation for that: our planet is moving at a faster pace than ever before, and that’s why the years seem shorter, and we feel like time is moving faster.

It hurts to admit it, doesn’t it?

At the beginning of this list, we mentioned that, as you become older, you start enjoying things that you probably didn’t enjoy before. Maybe you didn’t have time to read, and now you’re an avid book reader. Maybe you never paid attention to the world of rugs…and now you do!

Yes, one of the things that we start loving once we turn 40 is home decor items, rugs included. There’s nothing more fulfilling than going through a rug store or browsing the web trying to find the perfect rug for your home. The downside of this? Rugs are not cheap!

Walk of shame in your 40s!

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you probably know what “walk of shame” means. Remember how we mentioned that it is pretty hard to date once you get to your 40s? Well, the thing we have to tell is: once you turn 40, there will be no walks of shame anymore!

According to this tweet, we lied. There is a walk of shame in your 40s, and it is even more shameful than the other one. It’s when you forget to roll back the trash cans from the curb, and all your neighbors start judging you!

I’m not that old!

There are some jokes that you can only make once you’re a 40+ years old individual. Otherwise, they’ll just sound offensive to the people who are turning forty. Want an example of such jokes? Here’s a great one that we found:

You get it, right? This is a street sign in Europe that asks drivers to slow down because this is an area where older people circulate. Instead of showing the speed limit, somebody edited the photo and changed it to 40. What we’re saying is, this is a great picture to send your friends who are turning 40!

After I take a nap!

We’ve all seen those stereotypes in which an older person is always feeling random pain or falling asleep at the time most people are only sitting down to eat dinner. While it is natural to feel more sleepy as you age, we have to say that not all older people are the same!

Image courtesy of Ari Miller/ Twitter

Some people, for instance, are really active. They’re into sports and physical activity. Other people, however, just want to enjoy the times they have to rest. And we dedicate this post to those people! Getting off of the couch and living our best life in our 40s? Yeah, sure. Let me just take a quick nap first!

Hobbies in your 40s!

Like everything else in life, our hobbies change as we age. We’re obviously not going to be into the same things forever, and that’s completely okay. From a physical point of view, we also change our hobbies because our bodies can’t handle some things once we grow older.

For this guy, his hobbies once involved adventurous things such as hiking and traveling. As he grew older, he started appreciating other stuff, including painting and playing board games. When he got to his 40s, his favorite thing to do was annoy his teenage daughter — and, honestly, who can’t relate to that?

Everything is going great…

Losing your memory and being distracted is something that happens naturally once you start growing older. Sure, not everyone loses their memory, but we all sure do become distracted when we’re doing the simplest things. Want proof of that? Check out this next post:

See what we’re talking about? This woman, who’s also in her forties, really represented all of us who have been on Earth for at least 4 decades—searching for something that is within our reach or in our hands? That’s the story of our lives!

Who said I’m not fun?

Because of all the unfair stigmas and stereotypes surrounding older adults, it’s hard to find someone who’s completely okay with getting older. Most of us have a hard time accepting the idea of reaching our 40s, which may lead some of us to do stupid things to prove ourselves.

What are we talking about? About pulling crazy stunts just to prove that you’re fun! It’s not unusual to see someone in their 40s wearing Gen Z clothes or acting like a teenager/young adult. Deep down, we all know that they’re just trying to prove that they’re fun, which is okay. Our advice is: you do you…just don’t put too much pressure on your back, or you’ll feel it!

Extra time to clean the house!

When we’re young, the last thing on our minds is doing household chores. What teenage boy or girl happily does their chores when they’re supposed to? Well, that certainly changes as we become adults — and suddenly, all we care about is having a nice home of our own!

We all want a nice home that is very well taken care of, right? While that feeling is certainly common among people in their 20s, people in their 40s take it one step further. We already have a lovely home, but we don’t have that much time to take care of it. That’s why the summer holidays are the perfect time to put things in order!

All my rowdy friends have settled down!

Have you ever heard that popular Hank Williams, Jr. song that goes like: “all my rowdy friends have settled down…nobody wants to get loud…everybody just wants to go back home…”? We have to tell you something: once you get to your 40s, you’ll relate to these lyrics more than ever!

When you’re a 40-year-old individual, you probably won’t have the constant energy to do crazy things such as staying out partying the whole night. But when you do feel like making horrible decisions, you will not want to do them by yourself. And then you’ll be disappointed because all your friends are fast asleep when you call them after 8 pm!

Dating in your 40s!

We’ve already talked about how dating gets harder with age. By the time we’re 40, we’re already established in life — and we know all the things that attract us and all the things that make us want to run away from people.

Because of that, it’s pretty hard to find someone that fits all of our standards — and that’s what the dating pool in your 40s looks like! Sad, empty, and abandoned! Want to know how to change that? Here’s a tip: open your mind and try to be open to new experiences!

Woke up feeling…ancient!

To be completely honest, being in your 40s doesn’t mean you’re old. Like, at all. Want us to prove our point? Kim Kardashian, Leonardo DiCaprio, all of the Spice Girls…they’re all in their 40s. Do we think that they’re old? No! Still, some things make us feel older than we are!

This meme is so accurate that we feel it needs no explanation at all. Do you understand what TikTok is all about? We have got to confess that we don’t even know how to use that app — we just know that all the kids are crazy about it nowadays. And we sure feel old for not knowing how to use it!

Yikes!

We would like to dedicate this next post to all the men who are turning 40! Just like women in their 40s should visit their doctor and do a breast exam, men in their 40s need to go through an infamous exam known as “colonoscopy.”

While there’s nothing about a colonoscopy, there are countless men who refuse to do one because they think it is too invasive. We have to tell you that that’s quite a prejudicial mindset, especially considering that colonoscopies are meant to help you prevent having cancer!

Our day has come!

And we’ll have everything! Do you know when people make promises about marrying someone if they both are single in their 40s? We would like to know when did people start thinking that this promise is amazing! If you stop to think about it, it’s not all that flattering.

If your crush says they’ll marry you when you’re both 40, doesn’t that mean that they’ll only marry you after they get old and have no one else to spend their life with? At the same time that it is flattering that they even considered you as an option; it’s actually quite sad too!

Gotta adopt ‘em all!

We’ve all seen those stereotypes of single, old ladies who have dozens of cats at home, right? But did you know some people have dozens of dogs at home? If you don’t know at least one person who’s like that, then you’re probably that person!

By the time you’re in your 40s, your children will probably be in their teens, and the last thing they’ll want is to hug or cuddle their parents. And it’s because of that that people in their 40s start adopting puppies, and puppies, and more puppies. So many puppies you can’t even remember all of their names!

Dude, it’s pretty tough!

If we stop to think about all the things we’ve been complaining about our age, we would see how petty we sound. But we’re obviously not doing that. Turning 40 is a huge thing, and we’ll make the most of it — even if it means being over-dramatic!

This post certainly represents our friends who are already in their 40s and know precisely what we’re going through because they’ve already been there, done that. Our dramatic reactions to turning 40 certainly don’t faze them! But, hey, we do have our burdens as we become older – no one can judge us!

They’re everywhere!

Over the months, different topics have become trendy on the internet. Sometimes, everyone is talking about a certain hairdo. Other times, everybody is talking about certain movies and actors. And, currently, life after 40 has become the hot topic of the internet!

As a consequence, you can find memes about life in your 40s everywhere! It’s kind of overwhelming, but at the same time, it’s also pretty interesting to see that many people share our same struggles. Also, it certainly makes us feel better about ourselves, seeing that younger people think that 40-year-olds are chic!

Can you let me sulk in peace?

One thing is certain: it takes a while until you’re fully okay with turning 40. It’s not that this age is a bad age — but it sure does remind us that we’re not getting any younger. It’s not every day that we reach this milestone!

The thing about turning 40 is that you’ll be trying to deal with this event as calmly as possible, but there’s always someone ready to tease you! So, on top of dealing with a possible mid-life crisis, you’ll also have to deal with jokes from your family and friends!

…What was I saying again?

We all know that person who never remembers what they were saying, right? They can’t be interrupted for a single second without forgetting everything they were talking about and starting over! If you’re turning 40, we have some news for you: you’re one step closer to becoming that person!

In addition to forgetting what you were saying, you’ll start having occasional episodes of “did I tell you that story?” — even though you have probably told that story two or three times to the same person! Anyway…what were we saying?

The end of an era!

When we’re in our teens, we think that we’re the coolest kids on the block. When we get to our 20s, we just want to have fun. As we reach our 30s, we start thinking about getting to see the world and then settling down. What about our 40s? What happens next?

While it can feel a bit frightening, turning 40 is not at all a bad thing. It’s actually a great time to start living life to the fullest and doing all the things you’ve never had a chance of doing. If you always wanted to travel, it’s time to go on adventures. And if you’re single, it’s time to fall in love and write a new chapter in your life!
