Trekking Through Fire and Ice at Iceland’s Hot Springs

By Danielle P

There are few places on earth that inspire such magical feelings like Iceland. Once you see what this magnificent land has to offer, you’ll feel like anything is possible, as every cave and mountaintop looks like the perfect location to film the next major fantasy-themed blockbuster-movie.

Magical Views from Another Planet

Our journey takes place between the Landmannalaugar and Pórsmörk regions as we trek from region to the other. In Landmannalaugar, we’ll get to experience magical hot springs surrounded by pink, purple, green and blue mountaintops. Better yet, many avid travelers argue that this specific trek is most likely the best view of the Aurora Borealis, the famous northern lights, as you cross endless fields surrounded by rolling hills and fierce mountain peaks.

Once we reach Pórsmörk, we’ll be treated to an entirely-different view but equally as thought-provoking and beautiful. Pórsmörk is characterized by majestic rivers that cross through a black volcanic desert surrounded by ridged mountaintops covered by snow, making you feel like you’re actually visiting an alien planet. To make things even more magical, the higher temperatures of the Pórsmörk region allow for an eerie fog to take over significant portions of the view. In my own personal opinion, this region is quite possibly one of the most amazing sights you can see today, anywhere on the globe!

Why This Trek Is So Popular

This trek is absolutely gorgeous, but it’s also a lot more than that. You see, unlike many other treks, the scenery here can change very drastically – and very quickly. You’ll find yourself moving between black deserts, hot springs, green valleys and ice-caves every few kilometers, adding a healthy dose of excitement to every turn. It’s a truly amazing experience to be transported between an active volcano and a colorful ice cave in the span of mere minutes!
