The Timeless Charm Of Sean’s Bar: Oldest Pub In Ireland And Contender For World’s Oldest PubBy Francis Tunwase
If you ever stop by Ireland, you just have to step into Sean’s Bar in Athlone, Ireland, and immerse yourself in history! This pub is not just any ordinary bar; it’s the oldest in Ireland and possibly even the world. With a history dating back to 900 CE, this place is a historic establishment in Ireland.
It is said that the first owner, an innkeeper, assisted wanderers in crossing the River Shannon before Athlone and its bridge was established. What a nice man this was!
In the 70s, renovation work uncovered the building’s actual age, and part of the original design has been kept for visitors to admire, which is why many history lovers visit this place even if they don’t drink.
Sean Fitzsimons acquired the property in 1968 and renamed it, and the walls display the records of all past owners of the bar. This includes a certificate with the name of musician Boy George, who was a brief owner in 1987.
At Sean’s Bar, you’ll feel right at home with its dark wood bar, cozy fireplace, and traditional Irish band playing on a regular basis. And, of course, they serve a delicious pint of Guinness on tap and a selection of their own Irish whiskeys.
While Sean’s Bar has not officially named this establishment the oldest pub on the planet, it proudly embraces the title. Visit Sean’s Bar and be part of its storied history. We promise that you won’t regret taking the time to see this historic pub!
