It is said that the first owner, an innkeeper, assisted wanderers in crossing the River Shannon before Athlone and its bridge was established. What a nice man this was!

In the 70s, renovation work uncovered the building’s actual age, and part of the original design has been kept for visitors to admire, which is why many history lovers visit this place even if they don’t drink.

Sean Fitzsimons acquired the property in 1968 and renamed it, and the walls display the records of all past owners of the bar. This includes a certificate with the name of musician Boy George, who was a brief owner in 1987.

While Sean’s Bar has not officially named this establishment the oldest pub on the planet, it proudly embraces the title. Visit Sean’s Bar and be part of its storied history. We promise that you won’t regret taking the time to see this historic pub!
